2014 elections

2014 was an intensive year for Swedish politicians with the election to the European Parliament in spring and to the national Parliament in September. The Nationalistic and anti immigration Sweden Democratic Party became the third largest party in Sweden. This put the incoming Government in minority in the Parliament and thus had to accept to govern with the budget proposal of the opposition. The new prime minister threatened with an extraordinary election which eventually he cancelled after an agreement with the conservative parties, just befor the election was to be announced.

The Liberal party giving out flyers about the EU-election in the area of South ngby in western Stockholm, where turnout was highest in the last election.

The Moderate party closes its election night party. The party made its worst European elections ever.

The political spokespersons in education, Ibrahim Baylan (The Social Democratic Party), Gustav Fridolin (The Green Party) and Jan Bjrklund (The Liberal Party ) were all candidates for the post of Minister of Education . During a debate, the Teachers Union staged in Almedalen, was the differences in their policy made clear.

Green Party leader sa Romson say she have found Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt's green sweater in a trash can outside the government office Rosenbad. She wants him to put it on again and start investing in the environment. The Green Party was aiming to become the third largest party but got just over half as many votes as the Sweden Democrats who thus took that position.

The Social Democrats won the election . Helene Hellmark Knutsson was appointed Minister of Higher Education and Research , Stefan Lfven Prime Minister and Karin Wanngrd became Mayor of Stockholm.

The Sweden Democrats brought down the new government's budget. While Prime Minister Stefan Lfven announce to hold an extraordinary election Sweden Democrats acting leader Mattias Karlsson sees this as an opportunaty to hold a referendum on immigration.

The Government and the conservative opposition Alliansen presents a December Agreement, which will make it possible to reign in minority until 2022. Thus, The Sweden Democrats will lose much of its influence in future budget referendums.
